Board of Education of Topeka, decided by the U.S. Supreme Court on May 17, 1954, originated here – the case struck down the “separate but equal” doctrine and declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Monroe School, the historic segregated elementary school at the heart of the case, is preserved today as the Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park, established by Congress in 1992 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site draws visitors from around the world to learn about the case, which was led locally by NAACP Topeka chapter members including McKinley Burnett, Lucinda Todd, and attorneys Charles Scott, John Scott, and Charles Bledsoe

About Shawnee County
Shawnee County is Kansas’s third most populous county and the 357th most populous in the United States, covering 556 square miles of the Kansas River (Kaw River) valley in northeastern Kansas.
Topeka (the county seat and state capital, population ~126,000) is Kansas’s capital city and governmental center – a mid-sized capital city whose identity is shaped by state government employment, a significant African American history, and the ongoing challenges of post-industrial urban transition.
The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site is Topeka’s most significant historical landmark – the Monroe Elementary School (one of the segregated Black elementary schools in Topeka) is preserved as a national park site commemorating the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision that struck down school segregation. The case was filed by Oliver Brown on behalf of his daughter Linda, who was denied admission to the all-white Sumner Elementary School – Brown v. Board of Education became one of the most consequential legal decisions in American history.
The Kansas State Capitol (completed 1903) is famous for its murals depicting Kansas history, including John Steuart Curry’s controversial 1937 mural of John Brown – a towering, fierce abolitionist figure that some Kansans found glorified violence and others celebrated as honoring anti-slavery heroism.
The Menninger Foundation – one of the world’s most influential psychiatric institutions, founded in Topeka in 1919 by the Menninger family – relocated its primary operations to Houston in 2003 but maintained a presence in Topeka through the Menninger Clinic and the Menninger Department of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Gage Park – a large public park in central Topeka – houses the Topeka Zoo and the Reinisch Rose Garden (one of the largest public rose gardens in the United States).
Stormont Vail Health is Topeka’s primary hospital system and among the largest healthcare employers in Kansas.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Shawnee County District Court, 3rd Judicial District 200 SE 7th Street, Topeka, KS 66603 (785) 251-6700
Shawnee County was founded August 25, 1855, named for the Shawnee people. Its seat, Topeka, is the state capital of Kansas.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Kansas has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own statutory framework under the Kansas Probate Code (K.S.A. Chapter 59). Kansas offers several tracks depending on estate size and complexity:
Small Estate Affidavit – for estates where the total value of probate property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $75,000 (raised from $40,000 effective July 1, 2023), available under K.S.A. 59-1507b. This transfers personal property only. If the decedent left a will, it must still be filed with the probate court even though it isn’t being formally probated.
Simplified Administration – under the Kansas Simplified Estates Act (K.S.A. 59-3201 et seq.), the most common route for straightforward estates.
Formal Probate – supervised or unsupervised administration through the District Court for larger or more complex estates.
A will must be filed for probate within 6 months of death, or it may not be admitted, forcing the estate into intestate distribution.
Step 2: filing for formal probate
File a Petition for Probate of Will and Appointment of Executor (if there’s a will) or a Petition for Administration (if intestate) with the Shawnee County District Court.
The court admits the will (if any) and appoints the personal representative.
Notice to creditors is published per court order; creditors have a defined window to file claims.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and expenses, and – under unsupervised administration – acts with reduced court check-ins.
Without a surviving spouse or children, Kansas intestate succession law (K.S.A. 59-501 et seq.) determines which blood relatives inherit.
After debts are paid, the personal representative distributes assets and files a final accounting; the court closes the estate upon approval.
What it costs
Court costs may be remitted for small estates under recent statutory changes.
Executor/administrator and attorney fees are generally reasonable-fee based rather than a fixed statutory percentage.
Typical timelines: Small Estate Affidavit can proceed relatively quickly; formal probate commonly takes several months to over a year.
