Yadkin County, North Carolina
Yadkin Valley wine country and Daniel Boone's Yadkin River homeland - from the Yadkin Valley American Viticultural Area (North Carolina's first federally recognized wine appellation, centered on Yadkin County's ridge-top vineyards - the valley's continental climate, well-drained soils, and elevation produce award-winning wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, and other varietals at over a dozen wineries along the Yadkin Valley Wine Trail) to the county's connection to Daniel Boone (Boone's father Squire Boone settled on the Yadkin River in what is now Yadkin County, and the young Daniel grew up hunting these ridges before his famous Kentucky explorations).

Key Assets: Yadkin County is genuinely and centrally part of the YADKIN VALLEY AVA, North Carolina’s first and largest federally designated American Viticultural Area, spanning seven counties across the northwestern Piedmont; the region’s grape-growing story runs remarkably deep – Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, sailing along the Carolina coast in 1524, made the first written record of native wine grapes anywhere in what would become the United States, describing “many vines growing naturally there that would no doubt yield excellent wines”; North Carolina’s wine industry, centered historically on the sweet native Muscadine grape, thrived through the 19th and early 20th centuries before Prohibition effectively wiped it out; the modern renaissance of Yadkin Valley winemaking began in earnest in 1972, when Jack Kroustalis planted one of the first significant plantings of European-style vinifera grapes in North Carolina at what became Westbend Vineyards, going on to build the Yadkin Valley’s first bonded winery in 1988 after discovering the region’s rich, well-draining river-valley soil closely paralleled that of established European wine regions; the movement toward federal recognition gained real momentum when brothers Ed and Charlie Shelton – who had made their fortune in commercial construction – purchased land in their hometown of Dobson in 1994 and planted their first vines in 1999, having noticed the striking similarity between the local topsoil and that of Burgundy, France; beginning in 2000, the Sheltons spearheaded and personally funded the multi-year process of soil testing, climate studies, and other requirements needed to secure federal AVA designation, and in 2003 those efforts paid off: the Yadkin Valley was officially designated North Carolina’s first American Viticultural Area by the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau – a landmark achievement that finally allowed area wines to be labeled “Yadkin Valley” rather than simply “North Carolina,” and cemented the region’s reputation for producing bold, dry, European-style red and white wines rather than the sweeter Muscadine varieties long associated with the state; the designation transformed the regional economy, as former tobacco and dairy farms across Yadkin and neighboring counties increasingly shifted toward vineyard cultivation, and today the Yadkin Valley AVA anchors a thriving wine tourism industry sometimes affectionately called North Carolina’s “little Napa Valley,” home to dozens of wineries celebrated for elegant Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Viognier, and Riesling, along with distinctly regional expressions of native varietals like Cynthiana and Chambourcin
Notes: The Yadkin Valley AVA’s genuine, extensively documented status as North Carolina’s first federally designated wine region – with roots tracing all the way back to a 1524 explorer’s journal entry – is one of the most historically layered agricultural heritage landmarks found anywhere in this project.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Yadkin County Clerk of Superior Court – Estates Division 101 South State Street (mail: P.O. Box 95), Yadkinville, NC 27055 (336) 679-3600
Yadkin County was founded in 1850, named for the Yadkin River, in northwestern North Carolina, seated in Yadkinville.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
North Carolina has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code. Probate is handled by the Clerk of Superior Court – an elected official who serves as the ex officio judge of probate – in the county where the decedent was domiciled, under Chapter 28A of the North Carolina General Statutes. Unlike most states, North Carolina does not have a separate probate court; the Clerk’s Estates Division handles all wills, estates, and guardianship matters.
Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property of Decedent (“collection by affidavit,” N.C. Gen. Stat. § 28A-25-1 and § 28A-25-1.1) – available when the decedent’s personal property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $20,000, or $30,000 if the surviving spouse is the sole heir and receives all property covered by the statute. Filed at least 30 days after death, using Form AOC-E-203B. Real property CANNOT be transferred through this process. If the decedent left a will, the will must first be admitted to probate and a certified copy attached to the affidavit.
Summary Administration – an abbreviated procedure available only when the surviving spouse is the sole heir.
Full Estate Administration – required for larger or more complex estates; the personal representative (called “executor” if named in a will, “administrator” if intestate) is appointed by the Clerk and receives Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
File the will (if any) and a petition with the Clerk of Superior Court, Estates Division, in the county where the decedent was domiciled.
The Clerk appoints the personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors; North Carolina’s creditor claim period is typically at least three months from first publication.
The personal representative inventories the estate’s assets, pays debts and expenses, and distributes the remaining assets according to the will or North Carolina’s intestacy law, reporting back to the Clerk at key stages.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the Clerk.
What it costs
Filing fees for full estate administration generally follow the statewide statutory schedule, which scales with the estate’s value.
North Carolina repealed its state estate tax in 2013. There is no state estate tax and no state inheritance tax – only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
