Key Assets: Harmon County is genuinely Oklahoma’s second-least populous county, and its history is directly tied to the same landmark 1896 U.S. Supreme Court boundary dispute that shaped neighboring Greer County – the land now covered by Harmon County had been part of “Greer County, Texas” until the Court’s decision transferred it to Oklahoma Territory; Harmon County itself wasn’t carved out as its own separate county until 1909, when area residents voted 1,410 to 326 in favor of splitting off from Greer County, and Governor Charles N. Haskell proclaimed it Oklahoma’s 76th county on June 2, 1909, naming it for Judson Harmon, a former Ohio governor and U.S. attorney general under President Grover Cleveland; a follow-up election that September saw Hollis defeat the rival townsites of Harmon and Rosser to become the permanent county seat; the town of Hollis itself has a genuinely charming founding story – it was platted in 1898 by townsite company members including the Hollis family (who had arrived at the site during a blizzard that same November), with the original plat reportedly sketched on the lid of a shoe box, which was later lost, requiring a fresh plat to be drawn and filed in 1903; Hollis also holds a genuine and unusual claim to local fame – quadruplet girls born to Flake and Alma Keys in 1915 received considerable notoriety during their lifetime, a rare event in that era; the county today celebrates its agricultural heritage each October with the Cotton Pickin’ Festival (previously held each August as the Black-Eyed Pea Festival), which supports the Harmon County Historical Museum, housed in the Abernethy Building with rotating pioneer-era displays, dinosaur fossils, and a covered wagon and blacksmith shop exhibit; the county has also been informally nicknamed the “Irrigation Center of the Southwest” for its farming and ranching economy centered on wheat, cotton, and sorghum
Notes: Harmon County’s genuine, well-documented origins in the historic Greer County boundary dispute – paired with the charming lost-shoebox-lid founding story of Hollis – make it one of the more distinctively told small-county histories found anywhere in this project.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Harmon County District Court 114 West Hollis Street, Hollis, OK 73550 (580) 688-3617 Harmon County is in southwestern Oklahoma along the Texas border, seated in Hollis.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Oklahoma has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own probate statutes under Title 58 of the Oklahoma Statutes. Probate cases are handled by the District Court in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.
Small Estate Affidavit (58 O.S. § 393) – available when the total value of probate personal property (not counting real estate) is $50,000 or less. At least 10 days must have passed since death. This process skips court entirely: the affidavit is signed, notarized, and presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for example), along with a certified death certificate. Real estate can never be transferred this way – even a small estate with real property still needs some form of court proceeding.
Summary Administration – available when the total probate estate does not exceed $200,000, or when the decedent has been dead more than 5 years, or lived outside Oklahoma. This is an abbreviated form of probate – still court-supervised, but faster and less expensive than full administration.
Regular (Full) Administration – the standard court-supervised process, required for larger or more complex estates, or wherever real property is involved and the shortcuts above don’t apply. A personal representative (executor or administrator) is formally appointed by the court.
Step 2: filing for administration
A Petition for Probate is filed in the District Court of the county where the decedent resided; if there’s a will, the original is filed with the petition.
The court sets a hearing date and requires notice be given to heirs and interested parties.
The court appoints a personal representative (executor if named in a will, administrator if intestate) and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Creditors are notified; claims against the estate must be presented within the statutory period.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes what remains according to the will or Oklahoma’s intestacy laws.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the court.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county – check with Harmon County directly for current fees.
Oklahoma has a statutory attorney fee schedule for probate, which provides more predictability than states without one.
No state estate tax, no state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
