McCurtain County, Oklahoma
Beavers Bend State Park and Oklahoma's Hochatown cabin boom - from Beavers Bend State Park (one of Oklahoma's most beloved state parks - the Mountain Fork River flowing through the Ouachita Mountains' pine forests creates a landscape unlike anything else in Oklahoma, with trout fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and cedar log lodge accommodations drawing visitors year-round) to Hochatown's extraordinary cabin rental explosion (the tiny community of Hochatown near Broken Bow Lake has become one of the fastest-growing short-term rental destinations in the United States - thousands of private cabins have been built in the pine-forested hills, creating a cabin economy that rivals established mountain destinations).

Parks & Recreation
PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: McCurtain County is genuinely home to Beavers Bend State Park, one of the most visited state parks in all of Oklahoma, drawing over 2.28 million visitors in a single recent year; the 3,482-acre park, established in 1937 roughly 10.5 miles north of Broken Bow, sits along the Mountain Fork River and encompasses Broken Bow Lake, offering lodging at Lakeview Lodge, 47 cabins, campsites, an 18-hole golf course, hiking and biking trails, trout fishing, horseback riding, canoeing, and a scenic train ride; within the park, the Forest Heritage Center Museum displays 14 large dioramas painted by Harry Rossoll, the artist who actually created the iconic Smokey Bear forest-fire-prevention character; nearby in Idabel, the Museum of the Red River genuinely houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Native American art found anywhere, alongside a full-scale cast of Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, Oklahoma’s official state dinosaur – the most complete specimen of this 110-million-year-old fossil ever found was excavated less than 10 miles from the museum; the county is also home to the historic Barnes-Stevenson House, the restored 1911-1912 Victorian home of the county’s first judge, open for tours by appointment, and the Wheelock Mission & Academy in Millerton, featuring surviving buildings from a Choctaw youth boarding school that operated from 1832 to 1955; the county was formally created at Oklahoma statehood in 1907 from part of the Choctaw Nation, named to honor an influential Choctaw family – Jackson and Edmund McCurtain both served in the Confederate Army before their terms as Choctaw chief, while Green McCurtain was the Choctaw Nation’s last chief at the time of Oklahoma statehood
Notes: Beavers Bend State Park’s genuine standing as one of Oklahoma’s most visited state parks, paired with Idabel’s Museum of the Red River housing the official state dinosaur, make McCurtain County one of the most naturally and culturally significant counties found anywhere in this project.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
McCurtain County District Court 108 North Central Avenue, Idabel, OK 74745 (580) 286-3693
McCurtain County is in the far southeastern corner of Oklahoma, seated in Idabel – Oklahoma’s largest county by land area.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Oklahoma has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own probate statutes under Title 58 of the Oklahoma Statutes. Probate cases are handled by the District Court in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.
Small Estate Affidavit (58 O.S. § 393) – available when the total value of probate personal property (not counting real estate) is $50,000 or less. At least 10 days must have passed since death. This process skips court entirely: the affidavit is signed, notarized, and presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for example), along with a certified death certificate. Real estate can never be transferred this way – even a small estate with real property still needs some form of court proceeding.
Summary Administration – available when the total probate estate does not exceed $200,000, or when the decedent has been dead more than 5 years, or lived outside Oklahoma. This is an abbreviated form of probate – still court-supervised, but faster and less expensive than full administration.
Regular (Full) Administration – the standard court-supervised process, required for larger or more complex estates, or wherever real property is involved and the shortcuts above don’t apply. A personal representative (executor or administrator) is formally appointed by the court.
Step 2: filing for administration
A Petition for Probate is filed in the District Court of the county where the decedent resided; if there’s a will, the original is filed with the petition.
The court sets a hearing date and requires notice be given to heirs and interested parties.
The court appoints a personal representative (executor if named in a will, administrator if intestate) and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Creditors are notified; claims against the estate must be presented within the statutory period.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes what remains according to the will or Oklahoma’s intestacy laws.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the court.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county – check with McCurtain County directly for current fees.
Oklahoma has a statutory attorney fee schedule for probate, which provides more predictability than states without one.
No state estate tax, no state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
