PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Muskogee County’s seat, Muskogee, is genuinely one of Oklahoma’s most historically and culturally significant cities; the city was immortalized in Merle Haggard’s 1969 hit “Okie from Muskogee,” a touchstone anthem of its era, and the town honors this connection at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, housed in the historic Frisco Freight Depot; Muskogee is also genuinely the birthplace of beloved humorist and actor Will Rogers, home to the first woman to represent Oklahoma in Congress, Alice Robertson, and the historical residence of Bass Reeves, one of the first Black deputy U.S. marshals to serve west of the Mississippi River; the city’s most singular attraction is the USS Batfish, a genuine World War II Balao-class submarine now permanently berthed at Muskogee War Memorial Park beside the Arkansas River; commissioned in August 1943, the Batfish completed seven combat war patrols in the Pacific, sinking 14 Japanese vessels and, in a genuine U.S. Navy record, sank three enemy submarines in a single three-day period in February 1945; after later service as a Caribbean training vessel, the retired sub was “adopted” by the Oklahoma chapter of United States Submarine Veterans in 1971, towed by barge up the Arkansas River from New Orleans in 1972, and opened to the public on Memorial Day 1973, alongside more than 4,000 military artifacts; the city is also home to the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, housed in the historic 1875 Union Indian Agency building on Agency Hill, which served as the actual center of government for the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole Nations even before white settlement, and which today holds an extensive collection of original works by celebrated Muscogee/Seminole artist Jerome Tiger; nearby, Honor Heights Park hosts a beloved annual spring Azalea Festival and a winter Garden of Lights display
Notes: Muskogee’s genuine standing as the real “Okie from Muskogee,” home to the actual WWII submarine USS Batfish and the birthplace of Will Rogers and Bass Reeves, makes it one of the most culturally storied counties found anywhere in this project.
