PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: McIntosh County’s largest city, Checotah, is genuinely and proudly the hometown of country music superstar Carrie Underwood, winner of American Idol’s fourth season in 2005 – a sign along Highway 69 in town reads “Checotah Home of Carrie Underwood – American Idol 2005,” and her song “I Ain’t in Checotah Anymore” opens and closes with a description of the town’s single stoplight where Highways 69 and 40 meet; Checotah is also officially recognized as the self-proclaimed “Steer Wrestling Capital of the World,” honoring its deep rodeo and Western heritage; the county’s larger geography is dominated by Lake Eufaula, genuinely Oklahoma’s largest lake by surface area, with Lake Eufaula State Park (formerly Fountainhead State Park, created in 1965 alongside neighboring Arrowhead State Park) offering fishing, a children’s fishing pond, horseback riding at Lake Eufaula Stables, an 18-hole disc golf course, and the Deep Fork Nature Center; the county seat, Eufaula, carries a genuinely colorful outlaw legacy – Belle Starr, the notorious “Queen of the Bandits” and the most famous female outlaw of the Old West, made this region her home from 1873 to 1888, and her actual grave sits in a bend of the Canadian River just downstream and northeast of the Eufaula Dam; her gang, along with the Younger brothers and at times Jesse and Frank James, reportedly used hideouts in the area as well; just northeast of Checotah, the Battle of Honey Springs, fought July 17, 1863, was genuinely the largest and most significant Civil War battle fought in Indian Territory; the county has also produced a striking number of notable Oklahomans, including Pulitzer Prize winner Jim Lucas, poet and journalist Alexander Posey (born in the county, operated one of Oklahoma’s oldest newspapers, the Indian Journal, in Eufaula), NFL Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon and his brothers, artist Jerome Tiger, and U.S. Representative J.C. Watts, all from Eufaula, alongside historian John Hope Franklin, who lived in Rentiesville
Notes: McIntosh County’s genuine claim as Carrie Underwood’s hometown, paired with Belle Starr’s real grave and Oklahoma’s largest lake, make it one of the more culturally rich and historically colorful counties found anywhere in this project.
