Frederick and southwest Oklahoma Red River cotton country - from Frederick's position as the hub of Tillman County's agriculture-driven economy to the county's cotton and wheat farming on the Red River plains (Tillman County's fertile red plains along the Red River border with Texas support cotton, wheat, and cattle operations that define the classic southwest Oklahoma agricultural landscape - the county was among Oklahoma's leading cotton producers in the early 20th century and cotton farming continues alongside wheat and sorghum production in the rolling red clay terrain near the Texas line).

Key Assets: Tillman County’s seat, Frederick, was genuinely the site of one of the most remarkable presidential visits in Oklahoma Territory history – in April 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Frederick specifically to meet and hunt with John R. “Jack” Abernathy, a local rancher famous for his extraordinary and unusual ability to catch live wolves bare-handed by riding alongside them at a full gallop and grabbing their jaws; after greeting a crowd of roughly 5,000 people in the town square, Roosevelt joined Abernathy, the Comanche leader Quanah Parker, and others on a genuine five-day wolf hunt near Deep Red Creek in the area then known as the Big Pasture – Roosevelt reportedly declared the experience “the darndest thing I’ve seen,” and the event is memorialized today by a monument near the hunt site and interpreted at the Pioneer Townsite Museum in Frederick; the friendship continued afterward, and in 1910 two of Abernathy’s young sons, ages ten and six, genuinely rode horseback all the way from Oklahoma to New York City at Roosevelt’s personal invitation to ride in his ticker-tape parade alongside the Rough Riders; Frederick is also home to the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team, a living-history organization headquartered in restored World War II-era hangars at the historic Frederick Army Airfield, where members train and perform authentic WWII-style static-line parachute jumps from a genuine 1942 Douglas C-47 and a 1941 DC-3, both period aircraft actually used to train American paratroopers during the war; the organization also operates a rigorous nine-day Parachute School modeled on the original WWII Fort Benning training program
Notes: Frederick’s genuine 1905 Roosevelt wolf hunt with Jack Abernathy – followed by a real WWII paratrooper training legacy still active at the historic airfield today – makes Tillman County one of the most colorful frontier-and-military histories found anywhere in this project.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Tillman County District Court 201 North Main Street, Frederick, OK 73542 (580) 335-3023
Tillman County was created November 16, 1907 (statehood), named for former South Carolina governor Benjamin Tillman, in southwestern Oklahoma, seated in Frederick. The 1921 Tillman County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Oklahoma has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own probate statutes under Title 58 of the Oklahoma Statutes. Probate cases are handled by the District Court in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.
Small Estate Affidavit (58 O.S. § 393) – available when the total value of probate personal property (not counting real estate) is $50,000 or less. At least 10 days must have passed since death. This process skips court entirely: the affidavit is signed, notarized, and presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for example), along with a certified death certificate. Real estate can never be transferred this way – even a small estate with real property still needs some form of court proceeding.
Summary Administration – available when the total probate estate does not exceed $200,000, or when the decedent has been dead more than 5 years, or lived outside Oklahoma. This is an abbreviated form of probate – still court-supervised, but faster and less expensive than full administration.
Regular (Full) Administration – the standard court-supervised process, required for larger or more complex estates, or wherever real property is involved and the shortcuts above don’t apply. A personal representative (executor or administrator) is formally appointed by the court.
Step 2: filing for administration
A Petition for Probate is filed in the District Court of the county where the decedent resided; if there’s a will, the original is filed with the petition.
The court sets a hearing date and requires notice be given to heirs and interested parties.
The court appoints a personal representative (executor if named in a will, administrator if intestate) and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Creditors are notified; claims against the estate must be presented within the statutory period.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes what remains according to the will or Oklahoma’s intestacy laws.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the court.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county – check with Tillman County directly for current fees.
Oklahoma has a statutory attorney fee schedule for probate, which provides more predictability than states without one.
No state estate tax, no state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
