Brown County, South Dakota
On the Coteau des Prairies in north-central South Dakota, Aberdeen is the regional hub for a wide swath of the northern Great Plains - a city that L. Frank Baum called home before The Wizard of Oz, where a grain elevator and a medical center anchor an economy built on wheat and resilience.

Key Assets: Brown County’s seat, Aberdeen, is genuinely and famously the place where author L. Frank Baum – who would go on to write “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” – lived, worked, and gathered much of the real-world material that shaped his beloved fictional world; Baum and his wife moved to Aberdeen, then part of Dakota Territory, in July 1888, where he opened a variety store called “Baum’s Bazaar” that quickly became a local favorite – neighborhood children loved buying penny candy there and hearing Baum spin stories of faraway, fantastical places; unfortunately, a severe regional drought made it difficult for customers to pay their bills, and despite Baum’s generosity in extending credit, the bank ultimately forced the store to close in January 1890; undeterred, Baum pivoted to journalism, purchasing a local paper he renamed the “Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer,” which he edited and published from January 1890 until the paper, too, folded in March 1891 amid the ongoing drought’s toll on subscriptions – the publication was fondly remembered locally for its humorous “Our Landlady” column, satirizing small-town life through the eyes of a fictional Aberdeen boarding-house keeper; that April, having found little lasting business success on the Dakota prairie, Baum and his family relocated to Chicago, where he would go on to write the first Oz book in 1900; literary historians have long noted that Baum’s vivid description of the drought-stricken Kansas plains in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” closely mirrors his own real experiences living through the harsh, dry conditions of the Dakota prairie during his Aberdeen years; today, the Dakotah Prairie Museum in Aberdeen maintains a permanent exhibit honoring this local connection, including original bound volumes of Baum’s “Saturday Pioneer” columns, and the city’s beloved Storybook Land park draws on the same whimsical spirit that first took root during Baum’s brief but formative years on Main Street
Notes: Aberdeen’s genuine, well-documented connection to L. Frank Baum’s formative years – a failed storekeeper and newspaperman whose real Dakota prairie experiences helped inspire the world of Oz – is a charming piece of literary history worth sharing here.

About Brown County
Brown County’s Aberdeen carries a literary footnote that its residents take with appropriate pride and appropriate skepticism: L. Frank Baum lived and published a newspaper here from 1888 to 1891, before moving to Chicago and eventually writing The Wizard of Oz. Whether the South Dakota prairie landscape influenced Baum’s imagination toward cyclones and a desire to get somewhere else is a question the city has debated with good humor. What is certain is that Aberdeen is the regional hub for north-central South Dakota and southern North Dakota – its Hy-Vee grocery, its Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center, and its Northern State University provide services for communities spread across a vast and sparsely populated agricultural territory.
Northern State University, with about 3,500 students and a focus on education, business, and arts, gives Aberdeen a cultural life that smaller regional hubs in the northern Plains cannot sustain. The county’s agricultural economy – wheat, corn, soybeans, sunflowers, cattle – is the economic foundation for surrounding communities. Brown County’s position at the intersection of U.S. Highways 12, 281, and Interstate 29 makes it a natural distribution point for the region. The wetlands of the Coteau des Prairies – the glaciated prairie pothole country – provide extraordinary migratory bird habitat in the county’s eastern reaches.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Clerk of Courts, Brown County 25 Market Street, Aberdeen, SD 57401 (605) 626-2451
Brown County is in northeastern South Dakota, seated in Aberdeen – one of the state’s most populous counties.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
South Dakota HAS adopted the Uniform Probate Code (Articles I, II, III, IV, and VIII, effective July 1, 1995). Probate proceedings are handled by the Circuit Court in the county where the decedent lived, generally administered under the supervision of the Clerk of Courts.
Small Estate Affidavit – Collection of Personal Property (SDCL § 29A-3-1201) – available when the total gross value of the entire estate, wherever located, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $50,000. At least 30 days must have passed since death, no petition for appointment of a personal representative is pending or has been granted anywhere, and the decedent had no outstanding debts to the Department of Social Services for medical assistance or institutional/nursing home care. A separate affidavit exists for South Dakota real estate under $50,000, which must also be filed with the Register of Deeds where the property sits.
Informal Probate – the most common track in South Dakota, used when heirs and beneficiaries are getting along and no disputes are expected.
Unsupervised Formal Probate and Supervised Formal Probate – for more complex or contested situations.
Step 2: filing for administration
The personal representative (or an interested party) files an application or petition with the Clerk of Courts in Brown County, along with the original will if one exists.
For informal probate, the clerk reviews the application administratively and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration without a hearing in most cases.
Formal proceedings require notice to interested parties and, if contested, a hearing before the circuit judge.
The personal representative gathers and inventories assets, notifies creditors, and pays valid debts and expenses.
After debts and taxes are satisfied, remaining assets are distributed according to the will or South Dakota’s intestacy statutes (SDCL Chapter 29A-2).
The estate is formally closed by filing a sworn closing statement or a petition for formal order of discharge (SDCL § 29A-3-1003).
What it costs
Court costs are set by law and paid to the Clerk of Courts; confirm current fees with Brown County directly.
South Dakota has NO state estate tax and NO state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
A surviving spouse cannot be disinherited in South Dakota unless the spouse agrees.
