Notes: Greene County is genuinely and significantly home to the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site, honoring the 17th President of the United States, who rose from poverty as a Greeneville tailor to the nation’s highest office. The site (16.68 acres, National Register of Historic Places since 1966) comprises the tailor shop where Johnson worked and was educated (now enclosed in a Memorial Building; the State of Tennessee purchased it from Johnson’s heirs in 1921), his Early Home, the Andrew Johnson Homestead (purchased 1851), and the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery, where Johnson is buried beneath a marble monument bearing an eagle, a depiction of the Constitution and Bible, and the epitaph “His faith in the people never wavered.” Every year on May 26, visitors to the site vote on whether Johnson should have been removed from office following his real 1868 impeachment trial. Nearby Tusculum University – Tennessee’s oldest college and the 23rd-oldest in the country, founded 1794 – houses the President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library with family books and papers. A circa-1804-05 stone jail, rumored to be the oldest in Tennessee, was moved stone-by-stone to its present site near the Tailor Shop in 1838.

NAMING TRAP: do not confuse with the unrelated, much larger Greene County Public Library system in Ohio (Xenia/Dayton area), which frequently surfaces in general “Greene County library” searches.
Parks & Recreation
PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site (see above) is the county’s premier heritage destination. A historic downtown Greeneville walking tour (departing from the General Morgan Inn, April-October) retraces the streets Johnson walked after returning from the White House in 1869, passing historic churches and homes.
Notes: The genuine Andrew Johnson presidential heritage is one of the most historically significant sites covered in this entire project.

NOTES: Greene County is the second county in this batch (Grainger, Greene, Grundy, Hamblen, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardeman) of the Tennessee v2 redo. The genuine Andrew Johnson National Historic Site is one of the most historically significant presidential heritage sites in this entire project; the Greene Co. TN vs. Greene Co. OH library naming trap is worth flagging. All contact information above was sourced via web search as of early August 2026 and should be reconfirmed directly with the relevant office before a visit, deadline-sensitive filing, or emergency-adjacent decision.
About Greene County
Greene County’s Andrew Johnson National Historic Site preserves three properties associated with the only U.S. president from Tennessee’s northeast mountain region: the tailor shop where Johnson learned his trade, his early home, and his later Homestead – all within walking distance of downtown Greeneville. Johnson’s presidency – following Lincoln’s assassination, surviving the first presidential impeachment by a single Senate vote, and navigating Reconstruction’s turbulent early period – is one of the most consequential and contested in American history.
Tusculum University, founded in 1794, is the oldest college in Tennessee and among the oldest in the United States west of the Appalachians – a distinction that gives this small liberal arts college a heritage depth unusual in its region. Laughlin Memorial Hospital provides healthcare. The county’s agricultural economy – cattle, tobacco, some timber – is typical of Tennessee’s northeast mountain valleys.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Clerk and Master, Greene County
Greene County Courthouse, Lower Level, 101 South Main Street, Greeneville, TN 37743 (PO Box 263, Greeneville, TN 37744) (423) 798-1742 Greene County is in East Tennessee, seated in Greeneville. The Clerk and Master is appointed by the Chancellor for a six-year term under Article 6, § 13 of the Tennessee Constitution.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Tennessee has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code. Instead, Tennessee uses its own common form and solemn form probate framework, governed by Title 30 of the Tennessee Code Annotated. In Greene County, the Clerk and Master (part of Chancery Court) administers probate.
Small Estate Affidavit (T.C.A. §§ 30-4-101 through 30-4-103) – available when the value of the probate estate does not exceed $50,000 (personal property; real property is generally excluded). The affidavit can be filed no sooner than 45 days after death. A bond payable to the state is commonly required to protect creditors and other heirs, though it is often waived when the person filing is the estate’s sole heir/beneficiary, or when all heirs consent in writing.
Common Form Probate – the standard, uncontested path: the will (if any) is admitted to probate without formal notice to all interested parties, and the personal representative is appointed and issued Letters Testamentary (with a will) or Letters of Administration (without a will).
Solemn Form Probate – used when formal proof of the will’s validity is needed, typically because of an anticipated will contest; requires notice to all interested parties and a hearing.
Muniment of Title – used to transfer real estate when there is a valid will but no other assets requiring administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
The personal representative (or an interested party) files the original will (if one exists) and a Petition for Probate of Will or Petition for Letters of Administration with the Greene County Clerk and Master.
The court issues Letters Testamentary (testate) or Letters of Administration (intestate), giving the personal representative authority to act.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors in a local newspaper; creditors generally have a limited window (commonly around 4 months from the notice) to file claims.
The personal representative inventories and appraises the estate’s assets (may be waived by the will or by all beneficiaries).
The personal representative pays valid debts, expenses, and taxes.
The estate is closed with a final accounting (unless waived) and distribution to beneficiaries or heirs.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county; confirm current fees with Greene County directly.
Tennessee has no statutory fee schedule for attorneys or executors – fees must be “reasonable” and are subject to court approval if contested.
Tennessee does NOT impose a state estate tax or a state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
Typical timeline for a simple, uncontested estate: roughly 6-9 months.
