Floyd Friday Night Jamboree and Blue Ridge music culture - from the Floyd Country Store Friday Night Jamboree (every Friday night the Floyd Country Store hosts one of the most authentic old-time and bluegrass music gatherings in America, drawing musicians and dancers from across the region to the centuries-old flatfoot dance tradition that has been practiced continuously in Floyd County's mountain communities) to Floyd County's nationally recognized farm-to-table and intentional community culture (Floyd has become one of the most celebrated small towns in America for its concentration of organic farms, artisan producers, yoga studios, and alternative lifestyle communities that coexist with the county's traditional Appalachian farming heritage on the Blue Ridge plateau).

Inspection scheduling: Monday–Friday by phone, (540) 745-9359, with 24-hour advance notice required (no same-day inspections)
Services: Permits under the 2021 International codes (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Residential, Fuel Gas, Energy Conservation), plus the county’s own Erosion Control, Manufactured Home, and Subdivision Ordinances; the building official must approve plans and the permit application before a permit is issued
Notes: Work must begin within 6 months of permit issuance or the permit becomes invalid, requiring a new permit with no refund on the original. Genuinely important practical detail: an E-911 street address will NOT be issued for a property until a building permit is issued – the process is to first get a building permit, complete your first inspection (footer/electrical for manufactured homes), and only then receive your official address from Emergency Services. Any private or public drive serving 3+ residential or business structures is assigned its own E-911 street name.

Key Assets: The Floyd Country Store, a working general store over 100 years old on Main Street in downtown Floyd, home to the Friday Night Jamboree – a beloved bluegrass and old-time music tradition running continuously since the 1980s, when a bluegrass band’s Friday practice sessions grew into a full community gathering after the band left the doors open for passersby who wanted to listen; Country Living magazine named the store one of the two best places in the country to hear bluegrass music. The store also hosts Tuesday Tunes, Honky Tonk Thursdays, Saturday Americana Afternoons, the Saturday-night Floyd Radio Show, and the Sunday Music Jam, and is a key stop on The Crooked Road, Virginia’s 330-mile Heritage Music Trail. The Jamboree famously operates under “Granny’s Rules” – no smoking, no alcohol, no bad language.
Notes: Seating at the Jamboree is limited and the store gets very crowded during summer and fall – arrive early if you want a seat, and check floydcountrystore.com for the current weekly schedule before visiting, as show times and additional events can change

NOTES
Floyd County is a genuine cultural landmark in Appalachian music heritage – the century-old Floyd Country Store’s Friday Night Jamboree has drawn dancers and musicians continuously since the 1980s and is recognized nationally as one of the best places in the country to hear bluegrass. Practically speaking, the county’s unusual requirement that a building permit come before an official street address (rather than the more typical reverse order) is a detail worth knowing early if you’re planning new construction here. All contact information above was sourced from official county pages as of this writing; phone numbers and hours should be reconfirmed directly with the relevant office before a visit.
About Floyd County
Floyd County is Virginia’s old-time music capital and Blue Ridge cultural crossroads – the Friday Night Jamboree, thriving organic farm community, and the county’s extraordinary blend of traditional Appalachian and progressive rural cultures have made Floyd one of the most talked-about small towns in America on the crest of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Floyd (the county seat, population ~425) punches far above its weight culturally, drawing visitors, musicians, and rural lifestyle seekers from across the country to its music venues, farmers markets, and farm-to-table restaurants along the Blue Ridge Parkway corridor.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Floyd Circuit Court 100 East Main Street, Suite 200, Floyd, VA 24091 (540) 745-9303
Floyd County is in Southwest Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, county seat Floyd. Virginia has NO separate probate court – probate (“qualification”) is handled entirely by the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Virginia calls the probate process “qualification” rather than “appointment,” and it happens administratively at the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, not before a judge, unless a dispute arises.
Small Estate Affidavit (Va. Code § 64.2-601, the “Virginia Small Estate Act”) – available when the decedent’s entire personal probate estate (excluding real estate) does not exceed $75,000, at least 60 days have passed since death, and no personal representative has been appointed or has a pending application in any jurisdiction. If a will exists, it must first be admitted to probate (recorded with the Clerk) even though no executor is appointed. As of July 1, 2026, the affidavit must be filed on the statewide form (CC-1685).
Single Small Asset Release (Va. Code § 64.2-602) – any person or institution holding a single asset of $35,000 or less may release it directly to a successor once 60 days have passed since death and no personal representative has qualified, without any affidavit required at all.
Real Estate Affidavit (Form CC-1612) – if the decedent owned only real estate, this can be recorded directly in land records without full probate. Real estate generally cannot be transferred through the small estate affidavit process.
Full Qualification / Administration – the standard path for larger or more complex estates. The personal representative appears before the Clerk, takes an oath, files the will and death certificate, and typically posts a surety bond. The estate is then supervised by a Commissioner of Accounts throughout administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
The person seeking to qualify as executor or administrator brings the original will (if any) and a certified death certificate to the Floyd Circuit Court Clerk’s Office.
The Clerk reviews the will’s validity and admits it to probate.
The personal representative takes an oath and qualifies, posting a bond if required; the Clerk issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The Commissioner of Accounts oversees the estate going forward.
The personal representative notifies creditors, pays valid debts, and manages estate assets.
Remaining assets are distributed to beneficiaries or heirs, and the estate is closed once final accounting is approved.
What it costs
Virginia imposes a PROBATE TAX on most wills admitted to probate and grants of administration: $1 state tax + $0.33 local tax for every $1,000 of estate value. No tax is imposed on estates valued at $15,000 or less.
Filing fees for qualification vary by estate size; confirm current Floyd County fees directly.
Virginia does NOT impose a state estate tax or inheritance tax – repealed for deaths on or after July 1, 2007. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
