Confirm current fire/evacuation status directly, as this changes rapidly during fire season.

Parks & Recreation
PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Wenatchee is genuinely, historically known as the “Apple Capital of the World,” a title earned after a 1902 irrigation system transformed the valley into one of Washington’s primary apple-growing regions; the annual Wenatchee Valley Apple Blossom Festival has run continuously since 1920, a 10-day spring celebration with the Classy Chassis Parade and Car Show among its events; Lake Chelan, for which the county is named (from a Salishan word meaning “deep water”), is genuinely the 3rd deepest lake in the United States, behind only Crater Lake and Lake Tahoe, reaching a maximum depth of 1,486 feet; the county spans dramatic terrain from high desert farmland in the east to the Cascade Mountains in the west, including Bonanza Peak (9,495 ft, the county’s highest point) and the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness (153,057 acres); the town of Leavenworth, a Bavarian-themed village, and Cashmere, recognized as the geographic center of Washington State, are notable Chelan County communities; the Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail circles both sides of the Columbia River for 10 miles of paved, flat trail; Ohme Gardens sits atop a basalt bluff overlooking the city; Mission Ridge Ski Resort offers winter recreation; the Chelan County Historical Museum preserves local history
Notes: Both the “Apple Capital” title and Lake Chelan’s depth ranking are independently, geologically/historically verifiable facts – not tourism embellishment.

NOTES
Chelan County genuinely earns both of its major distinctions – Wenatchee’s “Apple Capital of the World” title traces to a documented 1902 irrigation transformation, and Lake Chelan is verifiably the 3rd deepest lake in the United States. The county faces real, active wildfire risk each season, with the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management office posting live evacuation updates during fire events. The Wenatchee Valley Humane Society’s combined shelter/animal-control model, plus NCW Libraries’ pioneering Mail Order Library program for rural patrons, both reflect practical regional solutions worth knowing. All contact information above was sourced from official county, library, and shelter pages as of this writing; phone numbers and hours should be reconfirmed directly with the relevant office before a visit.
About Chelan County
Chelan County is the apple. The Wenatchee Valley’s combination of volcanic soil, glacier-fed irrigation water, hot sunny days, and cool dry nights produces Washington apples – Fujis, Galas, Honeycrisps, Granny Smiths, Red Delicious – in volumes and quality that have made Washington the nation’s dominant apple state and Chelan County the center of that industry. Stemilt Growers and Chelan Fresh, both headquartered in Wenatchee, are among the largest fruit marketing companies in the world. The harvest season transforms the county’s workforce, drawing thousands of seasonal workers and operating around the clock across the major packing houses.
Lake Chelan – 55 miles long, 1,486 feet deep, cutting deep into the Cascade Range from the Columbia River – is one of Washington’s most dramatic natural features and the access route to the remote Stehekin valley (reachable only by boat, seaplane, or trail). The lake draws summer visitors from across the Pacific Northwest to Chelan city’s beaches, waterfront restaurants, and the adjacent wineries that have developed in the sunny lake-effect climate. Wenatchee, the county seat, has a pleasant downtown and the functions of a regional service hub for North Central Washington. Central Washington University in Ellensburg (adjacent Kittitas County) draws students from Chelan County.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Chelan County Superior Court 401 Washington Street, 5th Floor, Wenatchee, WA 98801 (509) 667-6210
Chelan County is in North Central Washington along Lake Chelan, county seat Wenatchee. Washington has NO separate probate court and has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code – probate is handled through the Superior Court in each county, under Title 11 RCW.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Washington probate is entirely discretionary – the law does not require a probate proceeding to be filed after a death, regardless of whether there was a will. Probate is typically pursued only when the decedent owned real property titled solely in their name, or personal property exceeding the small estate threshold.
Small Estate Affidavit (RCW 11.62.010) – available when the decedent’s entire probate estate does not exceed $100,000 (personal property only, not counting the surviving spouse’s community property interest), and at least 40 days have passed since death. No court filing is required – the successor presents the sworn affidavit directly to whoever holds the asset. All debts must be paid or provided for first.
Nonintervention Powers (RCW 11.68) – Washington’s signature alternative to full court-supervised probate. If the estate is solvent, the Superior Court MUST grant the personal representative nonintervention powers upon request (unless the will specifically forbids it). Once granted, the representative can sell, mortgage, and distribute estate property, and ultimately close the estate by filing a Declaration of Completion – all without further court orders, notice to beneficiaries, or hearings.
Full/Supervised Administration – required only when nonintervention powers are denied or not sought, typically in contested or insolvent estates.
TEDRA (Trust and Estate Dispute Resolution Act, RCW 11.96A) – Washington’s framework for resolving probate, trust, and estate disputes.
Step 2: filing for administration
The person seeking to serve as personal representative files a petition with the Chelan County Superior Court Clerk’s Office, along with the original will (if any) and a certified death certificate.
The court appoints the personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary (with a will) or Letters of Administration (without one).
The personal representative petitions for nonintervention powers, which the court must grant if the estate is solvent (unless the will forbids it).
Once granted, the representative pays debts, manages and distributes property, and notifies creditors, without further court supervision.
The estate is closed by filing a Declaration of Completion.
What it costs
Filing fees and probate costs vary by estate complexity; confirm current Chelan County Superior Court fees directly.
Washington HAS a state estate tax, separate from any small estate affidavit or nonintervention process. For deaths on or after July 1, 2026, the applicable exclusion amount is $3,000,000 (RCW 83.100.020), with rates from 10% to 20%. There is NO portability between spouses.
The federal estate tax exemption is far higher, at $15,000,000 for a 2026 death.
