PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (eastern Saguache County – the largest sand dunes in North America rising to 750 feet; Medano Creek seasonal flow; outstanding star gazing; see Alamosa County for full description); Crestone (a remarkable community at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with an extraordinary concentration of diverse spiritual traditions – Buddhist centers, Hindu ashrams, Carmelite monastery, Haidakhandi Universal Ashram, Shumei International, and many others; Crestone has been called “the spiritual heart of the Americas”; the setting at the base of 14,000-foot peaks is spectacular); Baca Grande (adjacent to Crestone – private land development with distinctive architecture; adjacent to Great Sand Dunes NP); Wheeler Geologic Area (Mineral County border but accessible from Saguache County via 4WD); La Garita Wilderness; Cochetopa Pass and Dome; San Luis Valley potato farms (Center is one of Colorado’s major potato farming communities – roadside farm stands)
Notes: Crestone’s spiritual community is one of the most remarkable human communities in Colorado – the concentration of Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Christian, Native American, and other spiritual traditions in a small mountain town at the base of dramatic peaks is genuinely extraordinary; Crestone has been deliberately established as a multi-faith spiritual center by the Manitou Foundation; the setting (at 8,000 ft below 14,000-ft Sangre de Cristo peaks in the middle of the San Luis Valley) is dramatic; Great Sand Dunes NP’s proximity makes Saguache County a destination for both spiritual seekers and outdoor adventurers

ENVIRONMENTAL / WASTE MANAGEMENT
Solid Waste: Saguache County – basic; transfer stations
Environmental: Colorado DPHE; Rio Grande Water Conservation District; NPS (Great Sand Dunes NP); USFS (Gunnison NF, Rio Grande NF); USFWS (Gunnison sage-grouse); San Luis Valley groundwater management
Notes: Gunnison sage-grouse conservation is a critical environmental priority in Saguache County – the species’ survival may depend on protecting the Saguache sage-grouse population; the county’s sage-grouse management plan balances agricultural interests with species recovery; Great Sand Dunes NP’s ecosystem depends on the San Luis Valley’s groundwater levels – the dune system’s uniqueness (the moist sand beneath the surface) requires the water table to remain at a certain level; water management throughout the San Luis Valley directly affects the Dunes ecosystem; Crestone’s alternative communities have generally strong environmental values; Center’s potato farming industry uses significant irrigation water from the aquifer; the San Luis Valley aquifer overdraft threatens long-term agricultural sustainability
About Saguache County County
Saguache County is the San Luis Valley’s Great Sand Dunes and wildlife refuge county – Colorado’s most ecologically diverse national park unit and the spectacular crane migrations through the valley’s wetland refuges define a vast, thinly populated county whose natural assets are extraordinary even by Colorado’s exceptional standards.
Saguache (the county seat, population ~500) is Saguache County’s small governmental hub on US 285, a San Luis Valley agricultural town whose Great Sand Dunes proximity and wildlife refuge access anchor its quiet community identity.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Colorado follows the Uniform Probate Code, one of the more streamlined, less court-intensive systems in the country.
Small Estate Affidavit (personal property) – for estates where personal property totals less than roughly $86,000 (twice the “exempt property” amount under C.R.S. § 15-11-403, which adjusts annually for inflation – always confirm the current year’s figure with the court). Available starting 10 days after the death. No court filing required; present the affidavit (Form JDF 999) directly to whoever holds the property.
Summary Administration for small real property – a separate, roughly parallel threshold applies to real property equity. This route does require a court filing.
Informal Probate – the standard path for most estates with a will or clear heirs and no disputes. Handled largely by the court Registrar with minimal hearings.
Formal Probate – required for contested wills, disputed appointments, or complicated estates.
If using the small estate affidavit (personal property)
Wait at least 10 days after the death.
Confirm the fair market value of the decedent’s property (less liens) doesn’t exceed the current statutory threshold, and that no probate has already been opened.
Complete Form JDF 999, Collection of Personal Property by Affidavit.
Present it, along with a certified death certificate, to the bank or institution holding the property – no court filing needed.
If filing for informal or formal probate
File the appropriate application with the Saguache County District Court: Form JDF 910 (with a will) or JDF 908 (without one). For formal probate, file JDF 920 or the intestate equivalent. Filing fee is $199.
The court (or Registrar, for informal cases) appoints a personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
In informal probate, the personal representative then manages the estate largely independently.
Creditors have 4 months from first publication of notice to file claims.
The estate closes once debts are paid and assets are distributed.
What it costs
Small estate affidavit: no court filing fee.
Informal or formal probate filing fee: $199.
Personal representative compensation: “reasonable compensation” – no fixed statutory percentage.
No Colorado state estate tax or inheritance tax.
