About Santa Rosa County
Santa Rosa County’s growth has been driven by two complementary forces: the Pensacola metropolitan area’s eastward residential expansion, as families seek lower housing prices than Escambia County proper, and the military community generated by Eglin Air Force Base’s massive presence in adjacent Okaloosa County. Military families frequently settle in Santa Rosa County for its school systems and relative affordability, commuting to Eglin or NAS Pensacola for work.
Navarre Beach, on Santa Rosa Island’s Emerald Coast shoreline, is one of Florida’s most underrated beach destinations – its proximity to more famous Gulf Shores and Destin sometimes makes it feel overlooked, which means the beaches are somewhat less crowded and the properties somewhat less expensive while offering essentially the same white sand and emerald water. Milton, the county seat, is an older north Florida Panhandle city with its own character, situated on Blackwater River – one of the clearest natural rivers in the world, a canoe and kayaking destination of regional significance.
