Key Assets: Beckham County’s seat, Sayre, is genuinely home to one of the most instantly recognizable pieces of movie history found along the entire length of historic Route 66 – the 1911 Beckham County Courthouse, which made a genuine, documented appearance in director John Ford’s 1940 film adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of Dust Bowl-era migration; in the film, as Henry Fonda’s Tom Joad and the rest of the Joad family rattle down Route 66 toward California in their overloaded truck, the truck turns onto Sayre’s East Main Street directly in front of the towering, dome-topped courthouse – the very same building that still stands as a fully operational seat of county government today, more than a century after its construction; the courthouse, a striking blend of neo-classical and Second Renaissance Revival architecture featuring Doric columns and a copper-sheeted cornice, was already serving the public for nearly two decades by the time Route 66 was officially routed through Sayre in 1928, cementing the town’s fate as a waypoint for travelers exploring the country by automobile; visitors today can walk Sayre’s historic downtown district – listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 – past the restored 800-seat Stovall Theatre (originally opened in 1950), the old Owl Drug Store, and a still-visible underground pedestrian walkway built to keep foot traffic safe during Route 66’s most congested years; nearby Sayre City Park preserves two genuine WPA-era Depression relics – a red-stone, pueblo-style pool house built in 1940 and a companion stone wall – while the 25,000-acre Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area lies just southwest of town
Notes: The Beckham County Courthouse’s genuine, well-documented 30-second appearance in “The Grapes of Wrath” – still standing as a working courthouse over a century after it was built – is one of the most cinematically significant landmarks found anywhere along Route 66 in this entire project.

About Beckham County
Beckham County is western Oklahoma’s Route 66 and country music heritage county – home to the childhood community of one of Nashville’s most beloved songwriters and some of the Mother Road’s most authentic remaining corridor.
Erick (population ~1,000) raised Roger Miller – the Grammy-winning songwriter whose “King of the Road” became one of country music’s most recognized songs. Miller’s unique comic songwriting style, his Broadway adaptation of Huckleberry Finn (Big River), and his influence on American popular music are celebrated in the Roger Miller Museum.
Elk City – technically in Beckham County – hosts the National Route 66 Museum complex, one of the most comprehensive Route 66 museum experiences in Oklahoma.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Beckham County District Court 302 East Main Street, Sayre, OK 73662 (580) 928-3330
Beckham County is in western Oklahoma, seated in Sayre. The 1911 Beckham County Courthouse, one of the few domed courthouses in Oklahoma and the tallest building in Sayre, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Oklahoma has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own probate statutes under Title 58 of the Oklahoma Statutes. Probate cases are handled by the District Court in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.
Small Estate Affidavit (58 O.S. § 393) – available when the total value of probate personal property (not counting real estate) is $50,000 or less. At least 10 days must have passed since death. This process skips court entirely: the affidavit is signed, notarized, and presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for example), along with a certified death certificate. Real estate can never be transferred this way – even a small estate with real property still needs some form of court proceeding.
Summary Administration – available when the total probate estate does not exceed $200,000, or when the decedent has been dead more than 5 years, or lived outside Oklahoma. This is an abbreviated form of probate – still court-supervised, but faster and less expensive than full administration.
Regular (Full) Administration – the standard court-supervised process, required for larger or more complex estates, or wherever real property is involved and the shortcuts above don’t apply. A personal representative (executor or administrator) is formally appointed by the court.
Step 2: filing for administration
A Petition for Probate is filed in the District Court of the county where the decedent resided; if there’s a will, the original is filed with the petition.
The court sets a hearing date and requires notice be given to heirs and interested parties.
The court appoints a personal representative (executor if named in a will, administrator if intestate) and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Creditors are notified; claims against the estate must be presented within the statutory period.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes what remains according to the will or Oklahoma’s intestacy laws.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the court.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county – check with Beckham County directly for current fees.
Oklahoma has a statutory attorney fee schedule for probate, which provides more predictability than states without one.
No state estate tax, no state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
