Key Assets: Lincoln County’s seat, Chandler, sits directly on Historic Route 66 and is genuinely home to the Chandler Route 66 Interpretive Center, widely regarded as one of the most substantive small-town Route 66 museums along the entire Mother Road; the museum occupies the historic 1937 Chandler Armory, an Art Deco/native-sandstone building constructed under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration and used by the Oklahoma National Guard’s 45th Infantry Division, Battery F, 160th Field Artillery – a unit that would later serve in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy during World War II – until a new armory was built in 1971; after decades of decline, deterioration, and even a real debate over demolition, a volunteer group called the Old Armory Restorers formed in 1998 and spent roughly a decade restoring the building, ultimately reopening its eastern half as the interpretive center in 2007; the museum offers a genuinely immersive walk through Route 66 history, letting visitors experience the Dust Bowl years from the seat of a Model-A Ford, the 1940s-50s from a 1948 Willys Jeep, and the 1960s from an authentic 1965 Ford Mustang, alongside vintage billboards and themed virtual hotel rooms; the building is also notable, according to its National Register listing, for having the only brick outhouse in the state of Oklahoma, complete with an original French fixture; the restored drill hall next door, now the Ben T. Walkingstick Conference Center, features its original wooden floor and welcomes 700-800 visitors monthly, roughly a fifth of them international; Chandler is also genuinely the hometown of Oklahoma’s fourth governor, J.B.A. Robertson, and of U.S. Marshal William Matthew “Bill” Tilghman, and served as early training headquarters for the Oklahoma National Guard
Notes: The Chandler Route 66 Interpretive Center’s genuine transformation from a decaying, nearly-demolished armory into one of the Mother Road’s most substantive small-town museums – complete with the only brick outhouse in Oklahoma – is one of the more remarkable community preservation stories found anywhere in this project.

About Lincoln County
Lincoln County is central Oklahoma’s Route 66 heritage county – an authentic Mother Road corridor where Stroud’s Rock Cafe inspired Pixar’s Cars and the two-lane highway’s original character is preserved.
Stroud (population ~2,700) is home to the Rock Cafe – a sandstone roadside restaurant opened in 1939 that became one of Route 66’s most beloved landmarks. Dawn Welch’s decades of operation and her personal story inspired Pixar animator John Lasseter to base the character Sally Carrera in Cars on her – making the Rock Cafe one of the Mother Road’s most literarily significant stops.
Chandler (the county seat, population ~3,100) hosts the Route 66 Interpretive Center, providing educational context for the highway’s cultural significance.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Lincoln County District Court 811 Manvel Avenue, Chandler, OK 74834 (405) 258-1264 Lincoln County is in central Oklahoma, seated in Chandler.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Oklahoma has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own probate statutes under Title 58 of the Oklahoma Statutes. Probate cases are handled by the District Court in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.
Small Estate Affidavit (58 O.S. § 393) – available when the total value of probate personal property (not counting real estate) is $50,000 or less. At least 10 days must have passed since death. This process skips court entirely: the affidavit is signed, notarized, and presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for example), along with a certified death certificate. Real estate can never be transferred this way – even a small estate with real property still needs some form of court proceeding.
Summary Administration – available when the total probate estate does not exceed $200,000, or when the decedent has been dead more than 5 years, or lived outside Oklahoma. This is an abbreviated form of probate – still court-supervised, but faster and less expensive than full administration.
Regular (Full) Administration – the standard court-supervised process, required for larger or more complex estates, or wherever real property is involved and the shortcuts above don’t apply. A personal representative (executor or administrator) is formally appointed by the court.
Step 2: filing for administration
A Petition for Probate is filed in the District Court of the county where the decedent resided; if there’s a will, the original is filed with the petition.
The court sets a hearing date and requires notice be given to heirs and interested parties.
The court appoints a personal representative (executor if named in a will, administrator if intestate) and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Creditors are notified; claims against the estate must be presented within the statutory period.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes what remains according to the will or Oklahoma’s intestacy laws.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the court.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county – check with Lincoln County directly for current fees.
Oklahoma has a statutory attorney fee schedule for probate, which provides more predictability than states without one.
No state estate tax, no state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
