McAlester's Italian immigrant mining heritage and the Oklahoma State Penitentiary - from McAlester's extraordinary Italian immigrant community (coal miners from Calabria, Sicily, and other Italian regions arrived in the 1870s-1900s to work the Pittsburg County coal seams - their descendants established restaurants, including Pete's Place in Krebs, whose family-style Italian dinners have made it one of Oklahoma's most beloved dining destinations for over a century) to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester (the state's primary maximum-security prison, housing death row and conducting executions) and the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant's massive munitions production.

Key Assets: Pittsburg County’s seat, McAlester, carries a genuinely layered identity as a coal-mining, military, and correctional hub in southeastern Oklahoma; the city is named for James Jackson “J.J.” McAlester, an early settler who became a Chickasaw Nation citizen through marriage and later served as Oklahoma’s lieutenant governor; McAlester is home to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, nicknamed “Big Mac,” a maximum-to-medium-security facility opened in 1908 that once hosted a real “inside the walls” prison rodeo broadcast nationally by ESPN’s SportsCenter, and was also the site of a serious 1973 riot widely regarded as one of the worst in American prison history; the city is also home to the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, established in 1943 and genuinely the largest ammunition storage facility in the entire Department of Defense, housing close to one-third of the nation’s munitions stockpile and manufacturing everything from 20mm shells to the massive 11-ton MOAB bomb; McAlester’s coal-mining boom brought a substantial wave of Italian immigrants to southeastern Oklahoma in the early 1900s, and the city has genuinely celebrated that heritage every Memorial Day weekend since 1971 with its Italian Festival, founded by local restaurant owner Bill Prichard and featuring the crowning of a community “Re e Regina” (king and queen); the Krebs Heritage Museum nearby documents this Italian immigrant history in more depth; McAlester’s political history is also notable – the city was long known as the “Capital of Little Dixie” for its old-time Democratic politics, and was home base to U.S. Speaker of the House Carl Albert and former Oklahoma Governor George Nigh
Notes: McAlester’s genuine trio of major institutions – the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, the country’s largest DoD ammunition depot, and a 50-plus-year Italian heritage festival – make Pittsburg County one of the most distinctive and InmateAid-relevant counties found anywhere in this project.

About Pittsburg County
Pittsburg County is southeastern Oklahoma’s Italian heritage and military-industrial county – a coal mining community whose immigrant legacy produced one of Oklahoma’s finest dining traditions.
McAlester (the county seat, population ~18,000) has an unexpected Italian cultural depth – the descendants of Italian coal miners established restaurants in Krebs that serve family-style Italian dinners of exceptional quality, with Pete’s Place (established 1925) being the most celebrated. The McAlester Army Ammunition Plant – one of the largest ammunition manufacturing facilities in the United States – provides significant military employment.
Pittsburg County’s coal heritage is documented in the historical record of the Choctaw Coal and Railway Company’s operations that brought Italian immigrants to the Oklahoma coalfields.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Pittsburg County District Court 115 East Carl Albert Parkway, McAlester, OK 74501 (918) 423-4859
Pittsburg County was formed from part of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory in 1907, named after Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in southeastern Oklahoma, seated in McAlester.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Oklahoma has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code, maintaining its own probate statutes under Title 58 of the Oklahoma Statutes. Probate cases are handled by the District Court in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.
Small Estate Affidavit (58 O.S. § 393) – available when the total value of probate personal property (not counting real estate) is $50,000 or less. At least 10 days must have passed since death. This process skips court entirely: the affidavit is signed, notarized, and presented directly to whoever holds the asset (a bank, for example), along with a certified death certificate. Real estate can never be transferred this way – even a small estate with real property still needs some form of court proceeding.
Summary Administration – available when the total probate estate does not exceed $200,000, or when the decedent has been dead more than 5 years, or lived outside Oklahoma. This is an abbreviated form of probate – still court-supervised, but faster and less expensive than full administration.
Regular (Full) Administration – the standard court-supervised process, required for larger or more complex estates, or wherever real property is involved and the shortcuts above don’t apply. A personal representative (executor or administrator) is formally appointed by the court.
Step 2: filing for administration
A Petition for Probate is filed in the District Court of the county where the decedent resided; if there’s a will, the original is filed with the petition.
The court sets a hearing date and requires notice be given to heirs and interested parties.
The court appoints a personal representative (executor if named in a will, administrator if intestate) and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Creditors are notified; claims against the estate must be presented within the statutory period.
The personal representative inventories assets, pays valid debts and taxes, and distributes what remains according to the will or Oklahoma’s intestacy laws.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the court.
What it costs
Filing fees vary by county – check with Pittsburg County directly for current fees.
Oklahoma has a statutory attorney fee schedule for probate, which provides more predictability than states without one.
No state estate tax, no state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
