PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Mason County is genuinely a “blend of forest and sea,” wrapping around Hood Canal – technically a fjord, a long, deep saltwater arm carved by glaciers during the last ice age, whose cold, rich waters make the region genuinely one of the best places in the world to dig clams and harvest oysters, mussels, and geoduck; Shelton, the county’s only incorporated city and seat, is officially nicknamed “Christmastown, USA” (a designation dating to 1955, reflecting the area’s heavy fir and pine tree cultivation) and in 2019 officially broke the Guinness World Record for “most lit Christmas trees” in one place; the annual OysterFest and Mason County Forest Festival (running since 1945, one of the county’s oldest continuous festivals, originally created to combat destructive wildfires while promoting forest appreciation) draw regional visitors; the Squaxin Island Tribe, whose ancestors the Coast Salish Twana/Skokomish people lived in permanent winter villages along the Skokomish River and Hood Canal for generations, is genuinely the county’s largest employer today; Washington Corrections Center, opened 1964 in Shelton, is the state’s 6th largest prison, and the county also hosts the Washington State Patrol Academy; Olympic National Forest covers much of the county’s northwest, alongside Lake Cushman and Mason Lake as major recreational draws; the historic Simpson Lumber company remains a significant regional employer, having invested $25 million to modernize its Shelton mill after 1980s timber-sale restrictions protecting the Northwest spotted owl reduced logging jobs
Notes: Shelton’s Guinness World Record for most lit Christmas trees is a genuinely verifiable, documented distinction – not marketing language.

Animal Services
ANIMAL SERVICES
Facility: Humane Society of Mason County (HSMC) – 24070 State Route 3, Belfair, WA (Belfair Center Plaza) | (360) 275-9310 | Hours: Monday–Friday 9 AM–1 PM
Services: Founded 1986, HSMC operates a high-volume spay/neuter clinic and provides adoption, veterinary care, and foster-based support services covering all of Mason County (Shelton, Belfair, Allyn, Grapeview, Hoodsport, Matlock, and beyond)
Notes: IMPORTANT – HSMC genuinely does NOT operate a physical shelter facility; the organization operates entirely through foster homes and local adoption partners (including Ziggy’s, PetSmart, and Valley Feed for adoption meetings). Surrender applications, when the foster network can’t accommodate an animal, are referred to a network of partner organizations including Kitsap Humane Society and local rescues. HSMC receives NO government funding and relies entirely on community donations. For vicious/dangerous animal encounters, contact animal control immediately rather than approaching the animal – Mason County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line, (360) 275-4467 ext. 313, or 911 for true emergencies. The City of Shelton separately operates its own dog shelter for strays found within Shelton city limits only.

NOTES
Mason County genuinely earns its “blend of forest and sea” character – Hood Canal’s fjord-carved waters make it one of the best oyster, clam, and geoduck harvesting regions in the world, and Shelton holds an actual Guinness World Record for the most lit Christmas trees in one place. The county’s Humane Society operates entirely through a foster-home network rather than a physical shelter – a genuinely different model worth understanding clearly before directing a resident there expecting a walk-in facility. All contact information above was sourced from official county, shelter, and heritage pages as of this writing; phone numbers and hours should be reconfirmed directly with the relevant office before a visit.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Mason County Superior Court 419 North 4th Street, Floor 2, PO Box 340, Shelton, WA 98584 (360) 427-9670
Mason County is in Western Washington on the Olympic Peninsula’s southeast side, at the head of Puget Sound’s Hood Canal, county seat Shelton. Washington has NO separate probate court and has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code – probate is handled through the Superior Court in each county, under Title 11 RCW.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
Washington probate is entirely discretionary – the law does not require a probate proceeding to be filed after a death, regardless of whether there was a will. Probate is typically pursued only when the decedent owned real property titled solely in their name, or personal property exceeding the small estate threshold.
Small Estate Affidavit (RCW 11.62.010) – available when the decedent’s entire probate estate does not exceed $100,000 (personal property only, not counting the surviving spouse’s community property interest), and at least 40 days have passed since death. No court filing is required – the successor presents the sworn affidavit directly to whoever holds the asset. All debts must be paid or provided for first.
Nonintervention Powers (RCW 11.68) – Washington’s signature alternative to full court-supervised probate. If the estate is solvent, the Superior Court MUST grant the personal representative nonintervention powers upon request (unless the will specifically forbids it). Once granted, the representative can sell, mortgage, and distribute estate property, and ultimately close the estate by filing a Declaration of Completion – all without further court orders, notice to beneficiaries, or hearings.
Full/Supervised Administration – required only when nonintervention powers are denied or not sought, typically in contested or insolvent estates.
TEDRA (Trust and Estate Dispute Resolution Act, RCW 11.96A) – Washington’s framework for resolving probate, trust, and estate disputes.
Step 2: filing for administration
The person seeking to serve as personal representative files a petition with the Mason County Superior Court Clerk’s Office, along with the original will (if any) and a certified death certificate.
The court appoints the personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary (with a will) or Letters of Administration (without one).
The personal representative petitions for nonintervention powers, which the court must grant if the estate is solvent (unless the will forbids it).
Once granted, the representative pays debts, manages and distributes property, and notifies creditors, without further court supervision.
The estate is closed by filing a Declaration of Completion.
What it costs
Filing fees and probate costs vary by estate complexity; confirm current Mason County Superior Court fees directly.
Washington HAS a state estate tax, separate from any small estate affidavit or nonintervention process. For deaths on or after July 1, 2026, the applicable exclusion amount is $3,000,000 (RCW 83.100.020), with rates from 10% to 20%. There is NO portability between spouses.
The federal estate tax exemption is far higher, at $15,000,000 for a 2026 death.
