Key Assets: Sanford, Lee County’s seat, is genuinely and famously known as the “BRICK CAPITAL OF THE USA,” a nickname earned through more than a century of large-scale industrial brick production made possible by a remarkable geological coincidence: Sanford sits precisely where white beach sand carried inland from the Atlantic coast meets the rich red clay and shale of North Carolina’s Piedmont region, creating an unusually ideal combination of raw materials for brick manufacturing; this abundant red clay and shale deposit turned Sanford into a genuine industrial powerhouse throughout the 20th century, and at the industry’s peak in 1959, Sanford alone produced a staggering 10 percent of all bricks manufactured in the entire United States, prompting the city to officially adopt the “Brick Capital of the USA” title, once proudly displayed on a welcome sign at the city’s edge; at one time as many as four separate family-owned brickmaking companies operated in Sanford, and the industry brought genuine prosperity and opportunity to generations of local families – notably, when the historic W.B. Wicker School (a Rosenwald School) opened in 1927, it provided vocational training tied to the brick trade specifically for the region’s Black students, offering a fast track to stable employment during an era of limited opportunity; though changing consumer preferences and industry consolidation have significantly slowed brick production since its mid-century peak, Lee Brick & Tile remains the last of Sanford’s once-thriving family-owned brickmakers still in operation today, now run by a third-generation proprietor, alongside larger manufacturer General Shale; much of downtown Sanford’s historic architecture is itself built from the very bricks that fueled the city’s economy, and the tradition is celebrated annually at the city’s BrickFest festival; Sanford also sits within the broader Seagrove Pottery region, home to generations of North Carolina pottery artisans, and the area’s brief run of Class D minor league baseball, the Sanford Spinners (1940-42, 1946-50), won the regular season pennant three separate times playing at historic Temple Park
Notes: Sanford’s genuine, extensively documented status as the historic “Brick Capital of the USA” – producing 10% of the nation’s entire brick supply at its 1959 peak – is one of the most distinctive industrial heritage sites found anywhere in this project.

About Lee County
Lee County’s Sanford has navigated the decline of the tobacco-processing economy that once defined it by deliberately recruiting advanced manufacturing – companies including Pfizer (pharmaceutical), Caterpillar Logistics, and numerous smaller operations have established facilities here, attracted by the county’s central North Carolina location on US-1 and the workforce trained at Central Carolina Community College. The resulting economic diversification has given Lee County more resilience than comparable tobacco-dependent communities.
The county sits in the Sandhills – a geological formation of deep sandy soils deposited by ancient seas, creating a distinctive landscape that supports longleaf pine ecosystems and the world-class golf of adjacent Moore County’s Pinehurst. Lee County itself is more working-class manufacturing than resort, but the geographic position gives it proximity to the Sandhills’ recreation and tourism economy.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Lee County Clerk of Superior Court – Estates Division 1400 South Horner Boulevard (mail: P.O. Box 4209), Sanford, NC 27331 (919) 718-4605
Lee County was founded April 1, 1908, named for Robert E. Lee, in central North Carolina, seated in Sanford. The 1908 Lee County Courthouse, Classical Revival in style, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
North Carolina has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code. Probate is handled by the Clerk of Superior Court – an elected official who serves as the ex officio judge of probate – in the county where the decedent was domiciled, under Chapter 28A of the North Carolina General Statutes. Unlike most states, North Carolina does not have a separate probate court; the Clerk’s Estates Division handles all wills, estates, and guardianship matters.
Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property of Decedent (“collection by affidavit,” N.C. Gen. Stat. § 28A-25-1 and § 28A-25-1.1) – available when the decedent’s personal property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $20,000, or $30,000 if the surviving spouse is the sole heir and receives all property covered by the statute. Filed at least 30 days after death, using Form AOC-E-203B. Real property CANNOT be transferred through this process. If the decedent left a will, the will must first be admitted to probate and a certified copy attached to the affidavit.
Summary Administration – an abbreviated procedure available only when the surviving spouse is the sole heir.
Full Estate Administration – required for larger or more complex estates; the personal representative (called “executor” if named in a will, “administrator” if intestate) is appointed by the Clerk and receives Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
File the will (if any) and a petition with the Clerk of Superior Court, Estates Division, in the county where the decedent was domiciled.
The Clerk appoints the personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors; North Carolina’s creditor claim period is typically at least three months from first publication.
The personal representative inventories the estate’s assets, pays debts and expenses, and distributes the remaining assets according to the will or North Carolina’s intestacy law, reporting back to the Clerk at key stages.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the Clerk.
What it costs
Filing fees for full estate administration generally follow the statewide statutory schedule, which scales with the estate’s value.
North Carolina repealed its state estate tax in 2013. There is no state estate tax and no state inheritance tax – only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
