Key Assets: Nash County is closely associated with legendary jazz pianist and composer THELONIOUS MONK, one of the most influential and original figures in the history of American music and a founding architect, alongside Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, of the bebop movement; Monk was born on October 10, 1917 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina’s largest community, which itself sits divided between Nash and Edgecombe counties along the historic railroad line that has run through the city since 1855 (readers should note that available historical markers place Monk’s specific birth location on the Edgecombe County side of Rocky Mount, though the city as a whole – and its Nash County side – remain closely identified with his origins); Monk’s father, also named Thelonious, worked along the Atlantic Coastline Railroad in Rocky Mount’s “Around the Y” neighborhood, a well-to-do area of the city’s Black community, and it was there that young Monk spent his earliest childhood years before his mother relocated the family to Manhattan’s San Juan Hill neighborhood when he was about four or five years old; though Monk spent nearly all of his adult life and career in New York City and rarely returned to North Carolina, writers and scholars, including Sam Stephenson in a well-known Oxford American profile, have argued that Rocky Mount’s thriving early-20th-century tobacco and railroad culture left a lasting influence on Monk’s music – some have speculated that the frequent train whistles of his Rocky Mount childhood may have directly inspired his composition “Little Rootie Tootie”; Monk went on to compose “‘Round Midnight,” widely regarded by outlets like jazzstandards.com as the most recorded jazz standard in history, along with other enduring classics like “Blue Monk” and “Epistrophy”; a state historical marker commemorating Monk’s origins was erected in Rocky Mount in 2011, and the section of South Street near his childhood home was renamed Monk Street in 2012 in his honor
Notes: Thelonious Monk’s genuine, extensively documented ties to Rocky Mount – a city divided between Nash and Edgecombe counties – are presented here with appropriate care regarding the precise county line, since Monk’s specific birth address is generally cited as falling on the Edgecombe County side of the city.

About Nash County
Nash County is eastern North Carolina’s sixth most populous county and the 612th most populous in the United States, covering 543 square miles of the Coastal Plain’s western edge.
Rocky Mount (population ~55,000, shared with Edgecombe County) is the Nash-Edgecombe county seat and regional commercial center – a city that straddles two counties and has been rebuilding its economic identity after decades of tobacco and textile decline. Novo Nordisk (Danish pharmaceutical giant) operates a major insulin manufacturing facility in Clayton/Rocky Mount area – making the region a significant pharmaceutical production center. The Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences in Rocky Mount provides cultural anchors. Rocky Mount is also where Thelonious Monk was born in 1917 – the jazz pianist and composer who became one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz.
Nashville (the county seat, population ~5,500) is a small county seat with traditional eastern North Carolina character – its modest size compared to Rocky Mount reflects the historic pattern of county seats predating the emergence of the region’s commercial centers.
Spring Hope and Red Oak are agricultural communities reflecting Nash County’s tobacco farming heritage – while tobacco acreage has declined dramatically with the tobacco buyout program, the landscape and culture of the eastern Carolina tobacco belt remains visible in the county’s rural communities.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Nash County Clerk of Superior Court – Estates Division 234 West Washington Street (mail: P.O. Box 759), Nashville, NC 27856 (252) 459-4081
Nash County is in eastern North Carolina, seated in Nashville (though Rocky Mount is the county’s largest city, straddling Nash and Edgecombe counties).
Step 1: figure out which path applies
North Carolina has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code. Probate is handled by the Clerk of Superior Court – an elected official who serves as the ex officio judge of probate – in the county where the decedent was domiciled, under Chapter 28A of the North Carolina General Statutes. Unlike most states, North Carolina does not have a separate probate court; the Clerk’s Estates Division handles all wills, estates, and guardianship matters.
Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property of Decedent (“collection by affidavit,” N.C. Gen. Stat. § 28A-25-1 and § 28A-25-1.1) – available when the decedent’s personal property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $20,000, or $30,000 if the surviving spouse is the sole heir and receives all property covered by the statute. Filed at least 30 days after death, using Form AOC-E-203B. Real property CANNOT be transferred through this process. If the decedent left a will, the will must first be admitted to probate and a certified copy attached to the affidavit.
Summary Administration – an abbreviated procedure available only when the surviving spouse is the sole heir.
Full Estate Administration – required for larger or more complex estates; the personal representative (called “executor” if named in a will, “administrator” if intestate) is appointed by the Clerk and receives Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
File the will (if any) and a petition with the Clerk of Superior Court, Estates Division, in the county where the decedent was domiciled.
The Clerk appoints the personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors; North Carolina’s creditor claim period is typically at least three months from first publication.
The personal representative inventories the estate’s assets, pays debts and expenses, and distributes the remaining assets according to the will or North Carolina’s intestacy law, reporting back to the Clerk at key stages.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the Clerk.
What it costs
Filing fees for full estate administration generally follow the statewide statutory schedule, which scales with the estate’s value.
North Carolina repealed its state estate tax in 2013. There is no state estate tax and no state inheritance tax – only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
