Key Assets: Rutherford County is genuinely and lovingly known as the primary filming location for the beloved 1987 film “Dirty Dancing,” and the town of Lake Lure – created in 1925 when Dr. Lucius Morse and his brothers dammed the Rocky Broad River to develop a luxury mountain resort community – remains a genuine pilgrimage site for fans of the film to this day; principal photography for the movie began on September 5, 1986 and lasted 43 days, with cast members Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey staying at the historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa during filming, which still operates today and offers “Dirty Dancing”-themed accommodations including “Johnny’s Cabin” and “Baby’s Bungalow”; many of the film’s most memorable scenes were shot at the former Camp Chimney Rock for Boys and Girls, whose staff cabins doubled as the fictional “Kellerman’s” resort housing and whose gymnasium was converted into the ballroom for the film’s now-iconic climactic “Time of My Life” dance sequence; the camp buildings were unfortunately demolished not long after filming wrapped, and the gymnasium itself later burned down in a fire in the late 1980s – but in a genuinely remarkable stroke of preservation, the original wooden dance floor was salvaged before the fire and now graces the lobby of the historic Esmeralda Inn & Restaurant in nearby Chimney Rock Village, meaning visitors today can literally stand and dance on the very floorboards where Swayze and Grey once performed; the Esmeralda Inn itself carries its own genuine film history, having served as a hideaway for silent-era film stars including Mary Pickford during on-location shoots decades earlier; beyond “Dirty Dancing,” the dramatic Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area – carved through the scenic Hickory Nut Gorge – has attracted numerous other film productions over the decades, including “Firestarter,” “My Fellow Americans,” “A Breed Apart,” “The Last of the Mohicans,” and the 1958 cult classic “Thunder Road”; the town of Lake Lure hosts an annual Dirty Dancing Festival each September featuring watermelon-carrying contests, dance lessons, a lake lift competition, and a lakeside screening of the film, with proceeds supporting the Swayze Foundation, a charity founded in honor of Patrick Swayze that helps children and special-needs adults pursue activities in the arts, sports, and animal therapy
Notes: Lake Lure and Chimney Rock’s genuine, extensively documented status as the primary filming location for “Dirty Dancing” – complete with a still-danceable salvaged floor from the film’s climactic scene – is one of the most beloved pop-culture heritage sites found anywhere in this project.

About Rutherford County
Rutherford County is southwestern North Carolina’s movie location and mountain lake county – Lake Lure’s Dirty Dancing connection and Chimney Rock’s dramatic granite pinnacle make it one of the most visually recognized mountain landscapes in American film.
Lake Lure (population ~1,300) – created in 1927 by damming the Rocky Broad River – provided the scenic backdrop for Dirty Dancing’s most iconic scenes. The annual Dirty Dancing Festival draws fans for outdoor screenings, dance competitions, and memorabilia events at the lake.
Chimney Rock State Park’s 315-foot granite monolith above Hickory Nut Gorge was featured in The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and provides some of western North Carolina’s most dramatic natural scenery.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Rutherford County Clerk of Superior Court – Estates Division 229 North Main Street, Rutherfordton, NC 28139 (828) 286-9136 Rutherford County is in the foothills of western North Carolina, seated in Rutherfordton.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
North Carolina has NOT adopted the Uniform Probate Code. Probate is handled by the Clerk of Superior Court – an elected official who serves as the ex officio judge of probate – in the county where the decedent was domiciled, under Chapter 28A of the North Carolina General Statutes. Unlike most states, North Carolina does not have a separate probate court; the Clerk’s Estates Division handles all wills, estates, and guardianship matters.
Affidavit for Collection of Personal Property of Decedent (“collection by affidavit,” N.C. Gen. Stat. § 28A-25-1 and § 28A-25-1.1) – available when the decedent’s personal property, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $20,000, or $30,000 if the surviving spouse is the sole heir and receives all property covered by the statute. Filed at least 30 days after death, using Form AOC-E-203B. Real property CANNOT be transferred through this process. If the decedent left a will, the will must first be admitted to probate and a certified copy attached to the affidavit.
Summary Administration – an abbreviated procedure available only when the surviving spouse is the sole heir.
Full Estate Administration – required for larger or more complex estates; the personal representative (called “executor” if named in a will, “administrator” if intestate) is appointed by the Clerk and receives Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
Step 2: filing for administration
File the will (if any) and a petition with the Clerk of Superior Court, Estates Division, in the county where the decedent was domiciled.
The Clerk appoints the personal representative and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration.
The personal representative publishes notice to creditors; North Carolina’s creditor claim period is typically at least three months from first publication.
The personal representative inventories the estate’s assets, pays debts and expenses, and distributes the remaining assets according to the will or North Carolina’s intestacy law, reporting back to the Clerk at key stages.
The estate is closed once a final accounting is filed and approved by the Clerk.
What it costs
Filing fees for full estate administration generally follow the statewide statutory schedule, which scales with the estate’s value.
North Carolina repealed its state estate tax in 2013. There is no state estate tax and no state inheritance tax – only the federal estate tax could apply, and only to very large estates.
