South Dakota County
Jackson County, South Dakota
Kadoka and Badlands gateway country - from Kadoka's position as the eastern gateway to Badlands National Park (the dramatic eroded buttes, pinnacles, and fossil-rich formations of Badlands National Park extend into Jackson County's landscape, and Kadoka serves as a stopping point for the millions of travelers who visit the park along Interstate 90 each year) to Jackson County's vast mixed-grass prairie ranching landscape (the county's remote rolling prairie and White River badlands terrain support extensive cattle ranching across one of South Dakota's most sparsely populated and scenically dramatic counties).

PARKS & RECREATION
Key Assets: Jackson County is genuinely home to a significant portion of the MINUTEMAN MISSILE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE, the first and only unit of the entire U.S. National Park Service dedicated exclusively to interpreting the history of the Cold War; established in 1999, the site preserves two historically significant facilities from a vast former nuclear missile field that, at its Cold War peak, spanned more than 13,500 square miles across southwestern South Dakota and once contained 150 armed Minuteman II intercontinental ballistic missiles overseen by 15 separate launch control facilities; the site’s two preserved components – the Delta-01 Launch Control Facility and the Delta-09 missile silo – remained on active military duty for nearly three decades, from 1963 until their deactivation in 1991 as the Cold War drew to a close; visitors today can view an unarmed Minuteman II missile still resting inside its original underground launch tube at Delta-09, a 12-foot-diameter, 80-foot-deep reinforced concrete silo whose massive 90-ton blast cover has been permanently rolled back and welded open, then fitted with a glass viewing enclosure – a design choice that genuinely serves double duty, simultaneously allowing visitors to see inside while also permitting satellite verification that the site remains permanently non-operational, in accordance with international arms control treaty obligations; genuinely, no missile was ever launched from the specific Delta-09 site now preserved as a national historic site, though a Minuteman missile was test-launched from a separate site near Newell, South Dakota, in 1965; because the only access to the underground portion of the site is by a 30-foot ladder, tours of the underground silo itself are not conducted for safety reasons, though visitors can explore the site’s above-ground features and its acclaimed visitor center, located just off Interstate 90
Notes: The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site’s genuine, extensively documented status as the National Park Service’s sole dedicated Cold War history site is one of the most historically distinctive landmarks found anywhere in this project – presented here factually as an educational public historic site, not as technical weapons information.

Probate & Estate
Losing someone and having to deal with courts and paperwork at the same time is hard. This section won’t make that easier, but it should tell you what to expect, what it costs, and where to go – so at least you’re not walking in blind.
Where to go
Clerk of Courts, Jackson County PO Box 128, 700 Main Street, Kadoka, SD 57543 (605) 837-2122
Jackson County was created in 1883 and organized in 1915, in western South Dakota (the “Gateway to the Badlands”), seated in Kadoka. The county is also home to the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site.
Step 1: figure out which path applies
South Dakota HAS adopted the Uniform Probate Code (Articles I, II, III, IV, and VIII, effective July 1, 1995). Probate proceedings are handled by the Circuit Court in the county where the decedent lived, generally administered under the supervision of the Clerk of Courts.
Small Estate Affidavit – Collection of Personal Property (SDCL § 29A-3-1201) – available when the total gross value of the entire estate, wherever located, less liens and encumbrances, does not exceed $50,000. At least 30 days must have passed since death, no petition for appointment of a personal representative is pending or has been granted anywhere, and the decedent had no outstanding debts to the Department of Social Services for medical assistance or institutional/nursing home care. A separate affidavit exists for South Dakota real estate under $50,000, which must also be filed with the Register of Deeds where the property sits.
Informal Probate – the most common track in South Dakota, used when heirs and beneficiaries are getting along and no disputes are expected.
Unsupervised Formal Probate and Supervised Formal Probate – for more complex or contested situations.
Step 2: filing for administration
The personal representative (or an interested party) files an application or petition with the Clerk of Courts in Jackson County, along with the original will if one exists.
For informal probate, the clerk reviews the application administratively and issues Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration without a hearing in most cases.
Formal proceedings require notice to interested parties and, if contested, a hearing before the circuit judge.
The personal representative gathers and inventories assets, notifies creditors, and pays valid debts and expenses.
After debts and taxes are satisfied, remaining assets are distributed according to the will or South Dakota’s intestacy statutes (SDCL Chapter 29A-2).
The estate is formally closed by filing a sworn closing statement or a petition for formal order of discharge (SDCL § 29A-3-1003).
What it costs
Court costs are set by law and paid to the Clerk of Courts; confirm current fees with Jackson County directly.
South Dakota has NO state estate tax and NO state inheritance tax. Only the federal estate tax may apply, and only to very large estates.
A surviving spouse cannot be disinherited in South Dakota unless the spouse agrees.
